If you have been experiencing muscle tension, aches and pains, or persistent discomfort, you may have come across two treatments that look very similar: dry needling and acupuncture.

Both treatments involve inserting fine needles into the skin, and both may be used to help manage pain. However, they have different origins, approaches and purposes.

So, what is the difference between dry needling and acupuncture, and how do you know which one might be right for you?

At Attend2Health in Buntingford, we believe in helping you understand your treatment options so you can make an informed decision about your health and wellbeing. We offer both these treatments at the clinic but they are carried out by different practitioners.

What is dry needling?

Dry needling is a treatment commonly used by some of our physiotherapists, sports massage therapists, Chiropractors and Osteopaths to help manage muscular pain and dysfunction.

It involves inserting a very fine, sterile needle into specific areas of muscle, often targeting what are known as trigger points. These are sensitive areas within a muscle that may be associated with tenderness, tightness or referred pain.

The aim is to influence the sensitivity of the affected tissues and help improve symptoms such as muscle discomfort and restricted movement.

Dry needling may be considered for people experiencing:

  • Muscle tightness and tension.
  • Neck and shoulder discomfort.
  • Back pain associated with muscular problems.
  • Sports-related muscle pain.
  • Restricted movement associated with muscle discomfort.

During treatment, you may feel a brief prick, an ache or a twitching sensation in the muscle. Not everyone experiences a muscle twitch, and it is not essential for the treatment to be effective.

Your practitioner will assess your symptoms and determine whether dry needling is appropriate as part of your overall treatment plan. It is often combined with other approaches, such as exercise, rehabilitation and manual therapy.

What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture has a much longer history and is traditionally associated with Chinese medicine.

Traditional acupuncture involves inserting fine needles at specific points on the body. In traditional Chinese medicine, these points are selected according to concepts relating to the body’s energy, often described as Qi (pronounced β€œchee”), and its flow through pathways known as meridians.

Acupuncture is also used within some modern healthcare settings, where practitioners may focus on the nervous system, pain processing and other physiological responses.

Depending on the practitioner’s training and approach, acupuncture may be used to help manage a range of symptoms, including certain types of pain, headaches and musculoskeletal discomfort.

Unlike dry needling, acupuncture does not necessarily target a tight muscle or trigger point. Needles may be placed at points on the body selected according to the treatment approach and the individual’s needs.

Acupuncture treatments are tailored to the person, and the number and location of needles will depend on the assessment and treatment plan. Jethro is our acupuncturist at Attend2Health and he is at the clinic every Tuesday afternoon. Jethro has been an Acupuncturist for 30 years and also practices Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM.)Β
